Is Your Child Ready For Preschool?

Sometimes, the parents have a bigger challenge of adapting to preschool then the child does. But, there are a few tell tale signs and questions you should ask yourself to know whether or not your child is ready for preschool.

  • Your child is getting bored around the house and needs more stimulation.
  • Your child is accustomed to being left for short periods of time - Sunday school daycare, a babysitter's house - without missing you too much.
  • Is your child in agony and crying when you pick him/her up? It is not unusual for toddlers to begin crying when the parent leaves, but it should not go on for weeks.
  • Your child is comfortable with meeting new people.
  • Your child can sit still for more than a few minutes.

If you are considering preschool for your child, first visit the school without your child and watch the interactions between teachers and parents. Then, take your child for a separate visit.

Visit a number of different preschools. While one preschool might not feel right for your child, another may be perfect. You also can check out the preschool on a trial basis to see if your child is ready. And lastly, have regular discussions with the teacher to see how things are going for your child.

If your instincts are telling you that your child is not ready for preschool, trust your parental instincts. It's better to keep your child at home a little longer than send them to preschool if they would be miserable.
