Healthy Sodas in Schools
National School Lunch Program Announcement

USDA Food and Nutrition Approves airforce Nutrisoda for Sale in U.S. Schools

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 14, 2006) - airforce Nutrisoda today announces that their line of nutrient enhanced sodas has been approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for inclusion in the U.S. National School Lunch Program.

The USDA has become more and more focused on supporting healthy dietary habits for students and constantly looks for new products that can meet these goals.  Unlike other products that eliminated unhealthy ingredients, airforce Nutrisoda added vitamins, minerals and amino acids that are specifically designed to support a students physical needs, said Valerie Addis registered dietitian and director of food service, Cherokee County School District, SC. The result of these additions is a soda that meets the stringent guidelines of the USDA and satisfies the discriminating tastes of students. Nutrisoda is cutting edge for what our school markets need at this time.

The ingredients in Nutrisodas are specifically designed to achieve tailored wellness goals and provide intelligent refreshment for students, said Jennifer Ashley, registered dietitian and director of wellness for the Ardea Beverage Company, manufacturer of airforce Nutrisoda. Nutrisodas can help combat the rise of childhood obesity, BMI levels and increasing rates of childhood diabetes. Actually, you are what you drink, and airforce Nutrisoda provides students and faculty a healthy and delicious alternative to sugar or caffeine-laden beverages.

airforce Nutrisoda provides leading edge nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins, minerals and herbs in a delicious format and ideal serving size of 8.4 fl. oz. With natural colors and fruit flavors, water filtered four times for extra purity and with zero sugar, caffeine, carbohydrates, fat, sodium and zero to very few calories, the five flavor school assortment is a refreshing and healthy beverage alternative for students. Nutrisodas taste good, look good and are good for you; you can call them the Good Soda.

The flavors that were approved by the USDA include:

  • Focus to help maintain and support mental alertness and concentration
  • Calm to help students stay relaxed and naturally energized to deal with everyday stress
  • Slender to help students healthily manage their weight
  • Radiant to help maintain and support healthy skin
  • And a yet to be announced new breakthrough flavor for release March/April 2007.

Additional flavors are being submitted for USDA review to extend the approved Nutrisoda school portfolio.

The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program that currently operates in over 100,000 public and non-profit private schools in the U.S. The program provides nutritionally balanced meals at reasonable or no cost to over 29 million students each school day.  The program requires that all products in the school lunches meet the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.  This recommends that no more than 30 percent of an individuals calories come from fat and less than 10 percent from saturated fat, and that one-third of the RDI is provided for protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories. The USDA gave Nutrisodas good grades for providing meaningful levels of vitamins, such as vitamin C, and other nutrients, while still providing zero sugar, caffeine, sodium and fat per each serving.
