Prevent
a Summer Tragedy: Water Safety Tips
If your child
is under 4 years old, his/her chances of drowning in a swimming
pool are significantly higher than other ages. Drowning is the second
leading cause of injury-related death for children. In water, a
young child can lose consciousness in two minutes - about the same
amount of time it takes to answer the phone. Don't ever leave your
child unattended in or near water no matter what the age.
Water Safety
Tips
1. Make certain an adult is constantly on watch. Always designate
a "lifeguard." Don't assume your partner is watching.
2. Never let your child swim alone. Always swim with a buddy.
3. Keep small children away from buckets containing liquid. Be sure
to empty all buckets when household chores are done.
4. Never drink alcohol while supervising children, before or during
swimming, boating or water skiing.
5. Avoid choking by never chewing gum or eating while doing water
activities.
6. Teach your child to swim. Swimming classes are not recommended
for children under age 4.
7. Learn CPR. Especially important for pool owners.
8. Do not rely on air-filled swimming aids (water wings) in place
of life jackets or preservers with children. They give a false sense
of security.
9. Check the water depth before entering.
For diving and
jumping, the American Red Cross recommends a minimum depth of 9
feet of water.
