Signs
of Child Abuse - Can You Recognize Them?
There are 4 basic types of child abuse:
-
Physical
- shaking, slapping, burning or scalding, kicking, strangling,
excessive corporate punishment and the non-accidental harm of
a child.
-
Neglect
- abandonment, refusal to seek treatment for an illness, health
hazards, inadequate supervision, ignoring a child's need to
be nurtured, affirmed or stimulated physically and emotionally,
keeping a child home from school and permitting chronic truancy.

Emotional
- verbal assault, emotional cruelty, closed confinement (kept
in a closet), inadequate nurturance and extreme discipline.

Sexual -
sexual contact between a child or teenager and an adult or significantly
older more powerful person including inappropriate verbal stimulation,
taking or showing sexually explicit photographs, exposure to
pornography and adult sexual activity.
