Signs of Child Abuse - Can You Recognize Them?

There are 4 basic types of child abuse:
  1. Physical - shaking, slapping, burning or scalding, kicking, strangling, excessive corporate punishment and the non-accidental harm of a child.

  2. Neglect - abandonment, refusal to seek treatment for an illness, health hazards, inadequate supervision, ignoring a child's need to be nurtured, affirmed or stimulated physically and emotionally, keeping a child home from school and permitting chronic truancy.

  3. Emotional - verbal assault, emotional cruelty, closed confinement (kept in a closet), inadequate nurturance and extreme discipline.

  4. Sexual - sexual contact between a child or teenager and an adult or significantly older more powerful person including inappropriate verbal stimulation, taking or showing sexually explicit photographs, exposure to pornography and adult sexual activity.

This information is adapted from the Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Violence.
