Stay One Step Ahead of Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are not just a nuisance. They can also lead to West Nile Virus in birds, horses and people. The greatest risk of illness is for people age 50 or older.
Mosquito control crews work through the summer to reduce the number of mosquitoes.
You can help by:
- Emptying any container that holds water outside.
- Changing water in bird baths, ponds, pet dishes, and animal troughs at least twice a week.
- Repairing leaking faucets and sprinklers.
- Cleaning clogged gutters.
- Covering trash containers.
- Maintaining pools and spas, making sure that covers don’t hold pockets of water.
To prevent bites:
- Use repellent.
- Wear protective clothing.
- Use netting for infant carriers.
- Install or repair screens on windows, doors and pool enclosures.
- Stay indoors at dawn or dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
