Be Fire Smart!
Fire Safety Guide for your home and family
Decrease your fire risk and increase your safety by following these tips.
6 Steps to take now!
- Create a family fire escape plan – include exit strategies for each room and choose and outside landmark as a safe meeting place for your family members. Practice your escape plan!
- Learn how to extinguish cooking fires – different cooking fires require different responses. Smother grease fires, keep the door closed on oven & microwave fires, use extinguishers for appliances, linens or electrical outlets.
- Turn off appliances before leaving the house - on your way out and before bed, always do a “spot” check of kitchen appliances, hair dryers, curling irons, entertainment electronics and electrical tools.
- Protect critical documents – store documents in a fireproof safe or in a safety deposit box away from home (include certificates, passports, deeds, legal documents, home inventory lists, videos or photos, insurance policies, computer backups, etc.)
- Keep emergency numbers handy – program emergency and insurance claims numbers into home and cell phones.
- Properly place and maintain smoke detectors – place detectors on all levels of your home, replace batteries twice a year when you change your clocks for Daylight Saving Time, test alarms monthly.
