HANNAH MONTANA: ONE IN A MILLION DVD
by Jane Louise Boursaw
Reel Rating: 4 out of 5 reels
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
DVD Release: Jan. 29, 2008
Genre: Musical, Comedy, Family, Tween
Runtime: 92 minutes
Directed by: Roger Christiansen, Jody Margolin
Cast: Miley Cyrus, Emily Osment, Jason Earles, Billy Ray Cyrus, Mitchel Musso, Cody Linley
SYNOPSIS: This DVD includes four episodes of “Hannah Montana,” the Disney Channel series starring Miley Cyrus as an awkward teenager who recently transferred from Tennessee to Malibu, bringing along her older brother, Jackson (Jason Earles), and father, songwriter Robbie Ray (Cyrus’ real-life dad, Billy Ray Cyrus). She and best friends Lilly (Emily Osment) and Oliver (Mitchel Musso) are doing their best to navigate through high school, but Miley leads a secret life as Hannah Montana, a pop singing sensation. Oh, the trouble this causes!
Sex/ Nudity: Some flirting and kisses. Jake and Miley are an item (sort of).
Violence/Gore: Some sibling rivalry and friendly squabbles.
Profanity: None, although Cyrus is not afraid to stand up for herself and often utters cute phrases like “Sweet niblets!”
Which Kids Will Like It? Kids aged 7 and older who love Disney Channel shows/movies like “Hannah Montana,” “Life With Derek,” and “High School Musical.” Also, budding musicians might pick up a few pointers from Hannah.
Will Parents Like It? Yes. Miley Cyrus is one of those rare teenagers who behaves appropriately for her age. No provocative clothes, a good sense of family and friends, and a great singing voice, to boot. So far, it appears that Miley’s real-life parents are keeping a close eye on her, and it’s paying off. Hopefully, she’ll stay out of rehab and continue to be a good role model for tweens and teens.
Special Features: Music Videos (“True Friend” and “One in a Million”); “Top Disney Channel Character Feuds” featurette.
REVIEW: If there’s a young girl in your household, you’re probably familiar with Miley Cyrus, the sweet 15-year-old who stars in her own Disney Channel series called “Hannah Montana.”
This DVD includes four episodes of the series, including a special episode starring the Jonas Brothers (another Disney Channel sensation). Cyrus stars as Miley Stewart, an awkward girl who recently transferred from Tennessee to Malibu, bringing along her older brother, Jackson (Jason Earles), and father, songwriter Robbie Ray (Cyrus’ real-life dad, Billy Ray Cyrus).
She and best friends Lilly (Emily Osment) and Oliver (Mitchel Musso) are just trying to navigate through school -- everything from getting good grades tests to crushing on the opposite sex. Adding intrigue is the fact that Miley leads a secret life as pop singing sensation Hannah Montana. Ok, so she just throws on a blonde wig on and calls it good. My 10-year-old daughter and I are always looking at each other going, “Don’t you think they’d notice it’s the SAME girl?!”
Anyway, it’s all good fun and offers lots of storylines about the two sides of Miley – awkward teenager and confident pop star. As young stars go, Cyrus is a good role model for girls. She dresses appropriately, has a good sense of friends and family and, best of all, she’s managed to stay out rehab! And she’s a pretty good singer, to boot. Sometimes her dreams get a teensy bit racy, like for instance, she dreams about being a vamp and telling Jake to “Plant one on me!”
Episodes on this DVD: Miley’s dad goes on a date with Lilly’s mom (Heather Locklear), but will sisterhood ruin the BFFs’ friendship? Jake (Cody Linley) comes back to town and gets friendly with Mikayla (Selena Gomez), Hannah’s arch rival. The Stewart family gets down ‘n dirty over an old feud (hint: Elvis was in the house – this ep stars Dolly Parton and Vicki Lawrence). And Miley is geeked about meeting the totally cute Jonas Brothers, until she learns they’d rather hang out with Robbie Ray.
All the eps feature innocent fun and rockin’ music. Also, l ook for “Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” (in 3-D!) to hit theaters on February 1, 2008. Snagging a ticket to Miley’s 54-city concert tour last year was a challenge, but now we can ALL see her in concert.
JANE’S REEL RATING SYSTEM :
One Reel: Pathetic. Even The Force can’t save it.
Two Reels: Tolerable. Coulda been a contender.
Three Reels: Something to talk about.
Four Reels: You want the truth? Great flick!
Five Reels: Wow! The stuff dreams are made of.
