Tasty and nutritious school lunches can be one of parents' biggest challenges. One of the surest ways to please the kids and meet the basic dietary guidelines, is to make them part of the planning and shopping. Within reason, try to accommodate their lunch requests, keeping nutrition guidelines in mind.
A nutritious lunch doesn't have to revolve around a traditional sandwich; consider different pita breads or tortilla wrappings filled with a favorite sandwich meat or salad, meat and cheese kabobs, or a macaroni salad. Salsa and chips, assorted pickles, or veggie sticks with dip make a lunch box bonus sure to please most kids. Fun foods like ants on a log or jiggly gelatin desserts are good choices for the younger kids. Below are several ideas to jazz up your child's lunch!

  1. Place a frozen juice pouch in your kids' lunch box - - it'll keep the food chilled and will be thawed by lunchtime. Pack antibacterial wet wipes so your kids can clean their hands before and after eating.
  2. Use small resealable bags to pack dressings. Kids can open one corner and simply squeeze onto salad, then discard.
  3. Use small resealable bags to pack dressings. Kids can open one corner and simply squeeze onto salad, then discard.
  4. Make bite-sized and mini versions of regular foods like sandwiches. They work well for small appetities and are more likely to be eaten.
  5. Go for variety. Make sandwiches using whole grain tortillas, bagels or pitas.
  6. Add grated veggies to sandwiches and wraps for crunch -- your kids won't notice they're eating something that's good for them!
  7. Get dipping! Pack salsa, hummus, yogurt or salad dressing for your little ones to dunk their sandwich, veggies or fruit into.
  8. Add a quick note to say good luck on a test or "I love you" -- it will brighten your child's day!
