Working on Household Chores Together

Young children love to imitate their parent's actions. Let them 'help' you with simple chores around the house; it gives them a sense of accomplishment and promotes self esteem. Have them place non- breakable items in the dishwasher with you, give them a small broom and let them sweep the floor with you, or let them help you plant spring flowers using one of their toy shovels. These family activities will create together-time and instill helpful values for a long time to come.

More household chores to do together with your kids:

  • cooking: getting plastic bowls & spoons from cupboard, scooping flour or sugar, stirring ingredients, pouring, cutting out cookies, etc.
  • gardening: shoveling potting soil with toy shovel, watering plants with hose or small watering can
  • cleaning: sweeping floor, vacuuming with small dustbuster, wiping mirrors, dusting tables, loading non-breakable items into dishwasher
  • meals: setting table, organizing cutlery and dishes, serving spoons
  • fixing: give them a set of toy tools to help you 'fix' broken toys or items in the garage
